LSU Office of Strategic Initiatives will host the 8th annual Undergraduate Research Conference on Oct. 14. The one-day regional conference entitled, “Excite, Explore, Experiment,” aims to provide a dynamic forum for undergraduates to present their research, interact with faculty and develop research collaborations with their peers. More than 650 undergraduate students have participated in this conference from universities across the South including Southern University Baton Rouge, Southern University New Orleans, Xavier University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Southeastern Louisiana University, Louisiana Tech University, University of Louisiana at Monroe, Mississippi State University, Jackson State University, University of South Carolina, University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Rice University, the University of New Orleans and LSU. This year’s conference will be held in the LSU Energy, Coast and Environment building.
Undergraduate students will present posters and oral presentations in the life sciences, math and physical sciences, technology and engineering and humanities and social sciences. All undergraduate students who are currently conducting research within these disciplines at universities and community colleges can submit an abstract. First and second place winners in each discipline category and each type of competition will be awarded a cash prize. Presentation abstracts are due Friday, Sept. 30.
Chris Impey, HHMI Professor and University Distinguished Professor of Astronomy at the University of Arizona is the keynote speaker. He will present a talk entitled, “Water Worlds – The Search for Habitable Exoplanets.”
General audience attendees including faculty, post-doctoral researchers, graduate students, undergraduate students, high school teachers, students and parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. There is a $20 registration fee for participants and attendees, which includes lunch and refreshments.
