SLIS Financial Awards
SLIS offers scholarships and fellowships for both full-time and part-time students.
All students who desire to be considered for an award must submit the Application Form for SLIS Financial Aid as well as a Financial Aid Essay explaining how the award will assist the student in meeting academic goals. Specific awards may have additional requirements.
Only full-time students (nine or more hours in the spring or fall, six or more hours in summer) are eligible for these awards:
Florrinell F. Morton Scholarship
Deadline: March 15 each year
One $2,200 scholarship is awarded annually.
The first annual Florrinell F. Morton Scholarship was awarded in the fall of 1983. Florrinell F. Morton served as dean of the LSU SLIS from 1944 to 1971. She also served as president of ALA from 1961-62; AALS president, 1946-47; SWLA president, 1960- 62; and LLA president, 1941-42.
Mary Marguerite Hanchey Memorial Fellowship
Deadline: March 15 each year
One $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually.
This scholarship is offered annually to a legal resident of Louisiana for graduate study in the School of Library & Information Science. Marguerite Meadows Hanchey, head of the Science Division and coordinator of Public Services, LSU Library, served as a member of the LSU Library staff from 1939 until her death in 1973. Mrs. Hanchey received her library degree from the LSU Library School in 1940.
Sidone Lawrence Walker Scholarship
Deadline: March 15 each year
One $1,800 scholarship is awarded annually.
The first Sidone Lawrence Walker Scholarship was awarded in the fall of 1989. Sidone Lawrence Walker, a native of Pineville, Louisiana, received her degree from LSU. Mrs. Walker worked for 20 years in the Arlington, Virginia, public library system.
Lewis Mack Fellowship Fellowship
Deadline: March 15 each year
One $800 scholarship is awarded annually.
This fellowship is offered annually to a qualified student for graduate study in the School of Library & Information Science. Mrs. Agnes Kasten, M.L.S., LSU, August, 1975, has donated this fellowship in honor of her uncle, Lewis Mack.
Donald D. Foos Scholarship
Deadline: March 15 each year
One $400 scholarship is awarded annually.
The first Donald D. Foos Scholarship was awarded in the fall of 2005. Donald D. Foos was dean of the School from 1971 to 1978.

Robert D. and Barbara R. Biggs Graduate Student Award
Deadline: March 15 each year
One scholarship is awarded annually.
Recipients of this award must be full-time graduate students at LSU enrolled in the School of Library & Information Science. It is the Donors’ preference that first consideration be given to females thirty years of age or older.

Agnes Corkern Sayers Endowed Fellowship
Deadline: March 15 each year
One scholarship is awarded annually.
Recipients of this award must be full-time graduate students enrolled in the School of Library & Information Science. It is the Donor’s preference that first consideration be given to women who are middle-aged and in the process of changing careers.

Ollie H. Burns Scholarship
Deadline: February 1 each year
Named in honor of Mrs. Ollie H. Burns, the first African American to receive the MLS Degree from Louisiana State University in 1957, this scholarship is supported by the Diversity Interest Group of the Louisiana Library Association.
The recipient of this scholarship must be a full-time or part-time graduate student at LSU enrolled in the School of Library & Information Science. First preference shall be given to minority students including African American, Hispanic, Native American, and Asian Pacific Islander.

Richard W. Peck Scholarship
Deadline: March 15 each year
One $700 fellowship is awarded annually to a student interested in pursuing a career in youth services librarianship in public libraries.
This fellowship was established with an endowment from award-winning author Richard W. Peck.
A written statement summarizing the applicant’s career objectives and interest in youth services must be submitted.
John and Hester Slocum Fellowship
Deadline: March 15 each year
One fellowship equal to the cost of one SLIS course is awarded annually to a resident of the New Orleans area.
This fellowship was established by an endowment from John and Hester Slocum, distinguished graduates of the LSU School of Library & Information Science.
A written statement of the applicant’s career objectives must be submitted in addition to the Financial Aid Application and the Financial Aid Essay.

Mary Jack Wintle Educational Fund
Deadline: March 15 each year
Mary Jack Wintle worked in the Library of Congress with the Library Services for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. She endowed this fund to support education, resources and issues relevant to patrons with disabilities. The award may be for education of students or faculty with disabilities, or to support development of publications or workshops for library professionals, or for materials in the LSU Libraries.
The Wintle scholarship may be given to a student with a disability. Applicants must provide a statement from the LSU Disability Services Office explaining the nature of the disability and appropriate accommodations. Documentation is only used to determine eligibility for the scholarship and will remain confidential.
Helen Margaret Yerger Dew Scholarship
Deadline: March 15 each year
This scholarship has been created by the children of Helen Margaret Yerger Dew as a memorial to her love of libraries and lifelong learning. She was a native of Shreveport and Tallulah who received her master’s degree in library science in 1941.
Recipients of this scholarship must be full-time or part-time graduate students at LSU enrolled in the School of Library & Information Science who demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in special libraries and information centers by submitting a written statement summarizing their career goals and interest in special libraries. Eligible students may or may not be residents of the state of Louisiana, and must attend classes on the campus of LSU, rather than through distance learning programs.

Friends of the Lafayette Parish Public Library Fellowship
Deadline: October 15 for fall; February 1 for spring each year.
One fellowship equal to the cost of one SLIS course is awarded annually to a resident of Lafayette Parish.
This fellowship was established with an endowment from the Friends of the Lafayette Parish Public Library. A written statement of the applicant’s career objectives must be submitted in addition to the Financial Aid Application and the Financial Aid Essay.
Louisiana Library Association Trustees Section Fellowship
Deadline: March 15 each year
One or more fellowships equal to the cost of one SLIS course are awarded annually to Louisiana residents interested in public librarianship.
This fellowship was established with an endowment from the Educational Foundation of the LLA Trustees Section.
A written statement of the applicant’s career objectives must be submitted in addition to the Financial Aid Application and the Financial Aid Essay.

Only part-time (fewer than nine hours in the spring or fall, six hours in the summer) students are eligible for this award:
H. W. Wilson Scholarship
Deadline: October 15 for fall; February 1 for spring each year.
One scholarship equal to the cost of one SLIS course is awarded to a part-time student for the fall semester and one scholarship is awarded to a part-time student for the spring semester.
This scholarship was established with an endowment from the H. W. Wilson Foundation.
Unconditional admission prior to the deadline dates is required for eligibility.
