SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships are important because they help us to recruit and support our graduate students. We need scholarships for full-time and for part-time students. A single course at LSU costs almost $1000, and the cost of one semester as a full-time student is more than $3,500.
Sometimes these awards make it possible for SLIS to recruit an excellent student who had considered going to another university. In other cases, a scholarship makes it possible for a student with limited resources to take one course as a part-time student while still working and supporting a family.
We welcome gifts of all sizes to add to existing scholarships and to endow new scholarships. All checks should be made payable to LSU Foundation. To contribute to an existing scholarship make a note on the memo line of the check to indicate the name of the fund. If you do not specify an account, we will decide where we can best use those funds at the time of the gift.
A new scholarship can recognize the accomplishments of a someone associated with SLIS, or can be a special way of remembering a loved one. Donors may stipulate their preferences for recipients who have a particular career interest, residence, or other criteria. If you are able to endow a new scholarship we will work with you to complete the legal agreement through the LSU Foundation. An endowment is a permanent account, managed by the LSU Foundation, to provide annual awards from the earning for that account.
PROFESSORSHIPS AND CHAIRS
Gifts to endow a professorship or chair provide support for faculty research and are a valuable way of recognizing and retaining the best faculty in SLIS. A special state program offering matching funds for gifts to endow professorships can add to your contributions. These matching funds are administered by the Louisiana Board of Regents.
ESTATE PLANNING AND FUTURE GIFTS
As part of their estate planning, several of our alumni and friends have made provisions in their wills for SLIS to receive funds for new scholarship, professorships, and chairs. For more information about ways to give to SLIS in the future through planned giving go to http://www.lsufoundation.org/ or http://lsu.giftlegacy.com/.
