The 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge, Ltd. and the LSU Office of Strategic Initiatives co-sponsor the ACT Prep Academy for 10th – 12th graders each fall and spring. We are happy to announce that applications are now being accepted for our Spring 2016 Academy.
The purpose of the Academy is to inform families on the higher education preparation process, familiarize students with the structure and format of the ACT, support subject content with test-taking tips and strategies to improve their composite ACT score to receive TOPS, and build confidence within students when taking the ACT. The ACT Prep Academy consists of three major programs: College Readiness, ACT Prep instruction, and Parent’s Workshop.
The College Readiness Information Session is held each summer and is open to all parents and students, especially families with (a) child(ren) interested in attending college. Financial literacy and financial aid for college preparation and attendance will be presented by specialists and admissions counselors from Louisiana State University, Southern University, Baton Rouge Community College, and Our Lady of the Lake College. They will discuss pertinent information, including requirements, dates and deadlines necessary for acceptance into and completion of college with minimal obstacles. Additionally, other college preparation requirements will be discussed in detail.
The ACT Prep Instruction is an intense 8-week session beginning with a pre-assessment, followed by classes in English, Reading, Math, and Science, and completed with a post assessment. Students are required to take the mandatory pre- and post assessments and register for the official ACT specified by the academy to participate (no exceptions). These mock exams are administered to identify strengths and weaknesses and allow an opportunity for an increased personalized experience to meet each students’ needs. All classes are taught by trained instructors, and includes supplemental online modules to support the in-class lessons. All curriculum and materials are provided by MasteryPrep, LLC.
Classes meet twice a week at your choice of one of two sites: Southern University (Mondays and Wednesdays) or LSU (Tuesdays and Thursdays) from 6:00pm – 7:30pm.
The Parent’s Workshop is catered to parents of students enrolled in the semesters’ academy. Additional information regarding the student’s success in the academy and beyond is emphasized. If you are interested in joining our Spring 2016 ACT Prep Academy, please see the information below!
