About Geaux BIG Baton Rouge
Geaux Big Baton Rouge is modeled after “The Big Event” program, which was established in 1982 at Texas A&M University and engaged more than 19,000 volunteers in 2013. Inspired by The Big Event Program at Texas A&M, LSU student Elaine Giles founded Geaux BIG Baton Rouge at LSU in 2011.
Geaux BIG Baton Rouge is a one-day event that unites LSU students and Baton Rouge residents through service to strengthen the university’s relationship with the community. Our volunteer efforts seek to focus on real needs by working on projects identified by Baton Rouge residents in areas including Old South Baton Rouge, Mid-City, and North Baton Rouge.
The first Geaux BIG Baton Rouge was held in 2013. Geaux BIG Baton Rouge hosted approximately 1,237 student volunteers and 71 work sites. LSU students volunteered an estimated 4,948 collective hours in the Baton Rouge community on that single day.
Individual vs. Team Volunteers
Students and community members can register to volunteer for Geaux BIG Baton Rouge as a individual, team leader, or as a team member.
To be a team leader, you should assemble a team of at least three people (including yourself). Team leaders will name their teams when they register and will ensure that all members of the team register to volunteer. Team leaders are required to attend a training before Geaux BIG to learn more about the logistics for the event.
Geaux BIG Baton Rouge is free for all LSU students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the university who wish to volunteer, but requires advance registration.
In order to participate, volunteers are required to register by February 25, 2015.
Volunteers should bring a light, portable snack, like a granola bar or trail mix, to maintain stamina throughout the morning.
