About Leading Edge
Leading Edge is a program for new students at LSU to learn more about their leadership abilities through retreat setting s and service projects. There are 4-5 sessions of Leading Edge each year with various topics to study leadership through.
Each session requires an pre-trip seminar, overnight retreat, and post-trip reflection meeting.
Capacity for each session will be available once registration opens.
What Participants Are Saying
“I promise that in the process of [your leadership] journey, you’ll find that you’ve become a great leader without even trying. So thank you Leading Edge, thank you to all my fellow participants, and thank you to my peer mentor Tom, for pushing me to understand myself, and helping me to undertake this journey.” –Steven Olsen, participant 2013
“Before I went to Leading Edge, I saw myself as a person who helps from the sidelines, and letting others have the limelight. I enjoyed helping others and I was happy but it was hard for me to see myself as a leader. However, I’ve learned that a leader is a responsible and positive mentor to others by effectively encouraging them to achieve goals.” -Sarah Rowland, participant 2013
Leading Edge is free and open to all new LSU students, particularly first-year and transfer students.
In order to participate, LSU students must be in good standing both academically and in conduct. Students should have earned a 2.5 gpa in the preceding semester and be available to participate in all facets of the session in which they are registering.
Capacity for each session is limited; waiting lists may be created, depending on the session.
Leading Edge was created in 2010 jointly by First Year Experience and Campus Life. The program originally included 50 first-year students who met weekly for the entire spring semester. Weekly meetings focused on leadership principles, models, and behavior of successful leaders.
After many suggestions from participants and research into what other universities are doing, Campus Life will team up with UREC in 2013 to offer a Leading Edge–with an “edge.” Shorter trips, with outdoor components and experiential learning elements, are sure to be a unique experience for new students in learning about leadership.
