About Geaux BIG Baton Rouge
Geaux Big Baton Rouge is modeled after “The Big Event” program, which was established in 1982 at Texas A&M University and engaged more than 19,000 volunteers in 2013. Inspired by The Big Event Program at Texas A&M, LSU student Elaine Giles founded Geaux BIG Baton Rouge at LSU in 2011.
Geaux BIG Baton Rouge is a one-day event that unites LSU students and Baton Rouge residents through service to strengthen the university’s relationship with the community. Our volunteer efforts seek to focus on real needs by working on projects identified by Baton Rouge residents in areas including Old South Baton Rouge, Mid-City, and North Baton Rouge.
The first Geaux BIG Baton Rouge was held April 20, 2013, with approximately 850 student volunteers and 29 work sites. LSU students volunteered an estimated 3,400 collective hours in the Baton Rouge community on that single day.
Geaux BIG Baton Rouge is free for all LSU students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the university who wish to volunteer. In order to participate, volunteers are required to register approximately one-month in advance of the event. Students and community members may sign up as teams or as individuals.
Registration for Geaux BIG Baton Rouge 2014 will open in early spring 2014.
