The word “change” is such an interesting word. My whole life the word “change” has meant to make something different. When the CHANGE Break program began through Volunteer LSU, the word “change” took at different form for me. Now the word change means the acronym that the CHANGE Break: Peru team made in early 2013, ” Creating Hope And Nurturing Global Experiences.”
I was able to experience CHANGE with fourteen LSU students and our three advisors in Peru. In June of 2013, the CHANGE Break: Peru team was able to work with children in after school programs in both the urban setting of Cusco and the rural setting of Cai Cay. The team also worked hard to improve the facilities that the children learned in through low-level construction work.
While we traveled to “create hope,” the CHANGE Break: Peru team was changed the most. As we worked with the children and their families, we were challenged to rethink all of our views of family, education, and service. In country, all of our preconceived notions were swept away. In June of 2013, all fourteen members of the CHANGE Break team exhibited that they had the ability to change things for the better while continuing to learn.
The CHANGE Break program will continue to affect positive differences on a global scale in 2014. Three CHANGE Break teams are currently preparing to travel in 2014 to affect change and be changed in the process. The CHANGE Break: Vancouver leaves today. The eleven students who are a part of the CHANGE Break: Vancouver team will be working with homelessness and poverty in marginalized populations. The team will be serving places such as Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Center, The Dugout, and Union Gospel Mission. Throughout the days of service, the team will be reflecting on what it means to serve and what they learn and experience as they work with the Vancouver population. The CHANGE Break: Vancouver team will also be attending the University of British Columbia Leadership Conference, which is the largest student run leadership conference in Canada. Through attending a leadership conference, the CHANGE Break team will be able to learn about how to apply what they have learned to really create change.
LSU students are traveling around the world to serve the needs of our global community. We all have a definition of change, but change is something that can become personal to all us. CHANGE Break team members learn how to affect the world around them in Baton Rouge, as well as their global community.
Follow the journey of the CHANGE Break: Vancouver team January 3-12, and see how they learn about serving others while being affected forever.
