What are your passions?
Find out what makes you happy and what you are passionate about! People always say if you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life. This should be your first priority in deciding what path to follow in terms of your future. If you’re passionate about animals, look into Pre-Vet. If you love fashion, Apparel Design might be the major for you.
What was your favorite subject in high school?
What subject did you like in high school? While college classes are not the exact same as they are in high school, the fundamentals are similar. If you loved English in high school, look into majoring in English or Mass Communication. If you enjoyed Math, look into Engineering or Accounting.
Talk to a Mentor
Whether you talk to a parent, a high school counselor, a teacher, or any adult you know, adults will most likely be happy to help you make this important decision. If you have some type of idea of what you want to do when you graduate, talk to someone with that kind of job and ask him or her what he or she majored in. This could help you better understand the major, as well as do some networking! LSU’s Career Services is a great place to get more information about 4 year plans, or just general advice. You can find some great mentors there!
Intern, Intern, Intern
You’ll never know how you feel about your future career until you walk a mile in its shoes for a day (or semester). Internships are a great way to know if your prospective major is what you want to do with your life. And if it is what you want to do with your life, you’ll be on the right track with some great resume boosters!
